BILLIE HOLIDAYS “GOD BLESS THE CHILD”-RONNIE BLANCHET

Whussup ya’ll?! So just wanted to give you a heads up n’ peak into what I’ve been up to recently. The music program that by The Grace of God I got into assigned me to perform some tunes! The first one I got comin’ up is my professor & I’s arrangement of Billie Holidays,”God Bless the Child”.

There’s all sorts of things I wanna talk about when it comes to this tune (besides it being a banger-especially the version from 1941 for me particularly), but to be brief suffice it to say, Billie Holiday as a singer is a big deal for me.

I remember around the time when my grandpa had passed away, there were some workers gettin’ rid of his stuff. My young self saw that box n’ was like, “ I’ll take those, please don’t throw them away”. He left behind some records and to this day, if it wasn’t for The Grace of God through my grandpa, I’d probably never be the person I am today (wait…maybe that’s a bad thing lol).

By a similar Grace, I got a record player and remember listening to my grandpa’s collection, but what caught my attention most was listening to Billie’s voice as I went to sleep. She was one of the first singers I think I really payed attention & listened to growin’ up. In some strange way it feels like all these things have come full circle. I’m stoked & nervous! According to Tony Bennett (legendary Jazz singer) that’s a good thing.
